(en) France, UCL AL #370 - Culture - Read: VISA, "New Fascisms: Union Responses" (ca, de, fr, it, pt, tr)[machine translation]

Date Tue, 12 May 2026 07:11:18 +0300

The association Vigilance and Antifascist Union Initiatives (VISA) has published a compelling book that examines the realities and dangers of "new fascisms" in France, Europe, and around the world. ---- The book is divided into several sections, richly illustrated with historical and recent documents: a historical and theoretical overview of fascists' anti-union views, a study of far-right proposals in France in recent years, an assessment of the balance of power in the European Parliament, and finally, a global overview, country by country, of attacks and resistance against modern forms of fascism that skillfully alternate between flexibility and authoritarianism to seize and maintain power.

This book is particularly useful for those mobilizing against the far right, as it is difficult to obtain precise information on the concrete offensives of fascists and their unfortunately numerous successes. While historical reminders are certainly necessary for fighting in France, they are insufficient. It is crucial to be able to expose the realities of the programs and practices of the far right here and now.

The traditional left is largely fragmented and discredited. In some cases, it even forges disastrous governmental or parliamentary alliances with far-right parties! Far-left organizations, which played a coordinating role in Europe against fascists in the 1970s, are now severely weakened. With what remains of their international connections, they should focus more on exchanging information and organizing concrete international mobilizations: declarations, demonstrations, and (unified, of course) rallies across Europe, with a real role to play, particularly among young people.

There remain the unions; with their strengths and weaknesses, they are in fact the last bulwark against the brown tide threatening the planet. And they are best positioned to deliver a clear message to the workers of their countries. Last, but also the best bulwark if they join forces. And here we are, dreaming of a European VISA to make things happen!
