(en) Italy, FAI, Umanita Nova #35-25 - Streets in Struggle (ca, de, it, pt, tr)[machine translation]

Date Sat, 17 Jan 2026 08:32:36 +0200

The month of November concluded with a weekend packed with strikes, demonstrations, sit-ins, and protest initiatives. The strike on Friday the 28th enlivened the streets of major cities, successfully rallying well beyond the ranks of the various unions and serving as a rallying point for students and many other activist groups. On Saturday the 29th, well-attended demonstrations in solidarity with the Palestinian people and against war and genocide took place in various Italian cities, including Rome, Milan, Messina, and Florence. In Turin, the demonstration against the Aerospace & Defense Meetings addressed the heart of the issue-the production and trade of weapons-bringing to the streets the deepest themes of antimilitarism, opposition to all wars, nationalism, patriotism, identity politics, and military hierarchies.

A weekend packed with diverse initiatives, each signaling, in its own way, a rekindling of social mobilization.

The strike called by grassroots unions for November 28th against the Budget Law, rearmament, the war economy, and the genocide in Palestine has rekindled the streets after the mobilization of recent months. Compared to September/October, last Friday's demonstrations certainly saw much lower numbers, but in many places, progress was made and participation was certainly higher than that which has characterized grassroots union strikes in recent years. If we were to think only in numbers, we would have to say: fewer than October 3rd, but more than ever. But there are more important overall assessments to be made, and one thing is certain: the intersection and cross-pollination of struggles, the development of a broad social opposition, can count on the new centrality given to the strike tool in recent months, and on the renewed awareness of the working class's role in halting the war machine. Because at the heart of this season, in addition to the large masses of young people and students, are precisely those so often considered lost: the many workers who have animated the streets, the protests, the pickets, sensitive to the specific issues of their sector's demands but also to broader issues, such as war, rearmament, military spending, aware of the link between war and exploitation. This is a unique moment. We cannot predict its evolution, but one thing is certain: it will not be union bureaucracies, party secretariats, or pre-packaged packages that will relaunch a new season of mobilizations, but rather self-organization and the concrete and collective experimentation of practices of struggle.
